Our family feels extremely blessed to have a church like Parkwood Baptist that has a heart for adoption and foster care. Not only do they have a great Adoption & Foster Care Support Group, but in honor of Mother's Day yesterday, they took up a Hands of Hope offering. The money given to this special offering goes to assist Parkwood families who are adopting.
To start this special service out, they had child dedication. There were 14 families who participated during the 11 am service. Three of those families, including ourselves, had adopted children.
So along with introducing Danelle and Cava, I mentioned not only that he was adopted from Ukraine but that Parkwood's Adoption Endowment Fund took part in bringing our son home. As you can tell from my our eyes, we get emotional whenever we talk about adoption.
We are also thankful that we have a minister, Jeff Long, who is supportive of families who adopt. He understands that we are all adopted into the family of God. As Romans 8:14 -16 tells us, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of fear, but you have received the Spirit of Adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father'."
Our family prayed before this service, not only for me (as I am extremely shy and not a public speaker), but that people's hearts would be moved to give generously to the adoption fund and that they would see, as James 1:27 says, "Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you." It is because of those who gave before, that we benefited and were able to bring Cava into our family and to be part of our church family.
He, like the other adopted children on that stage yesterday morning, are proof that God does place "the lonely in families" (Psalm 68:6).
